Our History

St. Michael’s Church began as a mission of Immanuel Episcopal Church of Racine, Wisconsin.  A couple of acres were purchased on the north side of the city, blocks from the historic Wind Point Lighthouse on the coast of Lake Michigan.  Our building was constructed in 1961 and the Rectory (the house where the rector – our pastor – has traditionally lived) a couple of years later.  What can be said about the architecture?  Our building is remarkably traditional in form while modern in style.  Ten or fifteen years ago, before the retro craze, it might have been considered curious.  But now, St. Michael’s certainly has a kind of post-war modern nautical chic

There was a time in the early days when St. Michael’s was seen as the private chapel for Johnson Wax – one of Racine’s most prominent companies (and whose headquarters were brilliantly designed by Frank Lloyd Wright).  Our proximity to the homes of many employees and executives led to this impression.  In much the same way over a hundred years ago the Episcopal Church was quipped as ‘the Republican party at prayer.’  One can only say in response – my, how times have changed!

Presently, we are a worshipping community of about 200 souls, give or take.  Fr. Terry McGugan has been our rector since 1997.  Father Terry’s unflagging energy and his commitment to the Alpha program have enabled St. Michael’s to remain a growing and vibrant community of faith.  Fr. Scott Seefeldt has been our assistant rector since 2007 and brings a passion for discipleship, Bible study, and worship.  Nowadays, our church is a much broader place where young and old, rich and poor, Republican and Democrat (not to mention Greens, Libertarians, and everything else!) come together to know and love Jesus and follow him as Savior and Lord.  We are unabashedly and unswervingly committed to putting Jesus above all else and to serving him as best as we are able to discern how.

While it is a long and sometimes difficult road to get involved in any new family system, we hope that you will find St. Michael’s a place where the historic worship of the Church is honored, where the teaching is relevant to your life, and where there is at least an attempt to make the experience of community authentic.
