St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel

Of the many angels spoken of in the Bible, only four are called by name: Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, and Michael. The archangel Michael is the most venerated of all the angels. He is the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God’s people and delivers peace to them at the end of this life’s mortal struggle.
According to Christian tradition, the history of the world is bounded by two great events: the War in Heaven and the Last Judgement. In both of these episodes, Michael plays a pivotal role.
Michael’s battle with Satan is described in Revelation: "There was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon . . . And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil . . ." (Rev. XII, 7-9).
St. Michael the Archangel is a warrior who provides an antidote to the stereotypical representations of angels as sweet cherubs. He is the embodiment of the triumphant nature of Truth.
